About Selenium

Selenium is a browser automation tool. It is primarily used for automating web applications for testing purposes, though it can also be applied to automating web-based administration tasks.

The project consists of three main components: Selenium WebDriver, a collection of language-specific bindings for driving a browser directly, used to build regression automation suites and tests that can be scaled and distributed across environments; Selenium IDE, a browser add-on for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge that provides record-and-playback of browser interactions for quick bug reproduction scripts and exploratory testing; and Selenium Grid, which distributes and runs tests across multiple machines and environments from a central point, allowing tests to run against many browser/OS combinations.

Selenium is maintained under the Software Freedom Conservancy and accepts sponsorships and donations through Open Collective.

Key features

  • Automates web browsers for testing and administration tasks
  • WebDriver: language-specific bindings to drive a browser for regression automation suites
  • IDE: Chrome, Firefox and Edge add-on for record-and-playback script creation
