About Causeway

Causeway is a browser automation tool implemented as a standalone Rust binary that connects an AI assistant to a real browser. It exposes 52 tools over the Model Context Protocol (MCP) via stdio to the AI client and translates those calls into Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) commands sent over WebSocket to the browser. The tools cover navigation, tab management, page interaction (clicking, typing, form filling, drag and drop, file upload, keyboard input), reading page content (screenshots, text extraction, DOM inspection, accessibility snapshots), and waiting for elements or navigation events.

Rather than running a headless or simulated browser, Causeway drives the user's actual Chromium browser instance, including its existing tabs, session, and cookies. It includes a "chain" tool that batches multiple actions into a single call with randomized delays between steps, and a stealth mode that masks common CDP automation fingerprints (such as navigator.webdriver, chrome.runtime, and Function.toString) to avoid detection by bot-detection systems like Cloudflare Bot Fight Mode.

The tool is positioned as an alternative to browser automation frameworks such as Selenium, Playwright, and Puppeteer, and to browser extensions that require access to a user's profile, cookies, or history. It is intended for use with AI coding assistants such as Claude Code that need to interact with live web pages rather than static HTML fetches. The project is available to view on GitHub.

Key features

  • Standalone Rust binary driving a real Chromium browser via CDP over WebSocket
  • Exposes 52 browser automation tools to AI over MCP/stdio
  • Stealth mode hides automation fingerprints like navigator.webdriver and chrome.runtime
  • Chain tool batches multiple actions into one call with human-like delays
  • Uses your real browser tabs, cookies, and session instead of a headless simulation

Frequently asked questions

What is Causeway?

Causeway is a standalone Rust binary that acts as an MCP server, letting an AI control a real browser by translating MCP tool calls into Chrome DevTools Protocol commands.

Does it use headless browsers or extensions?

No, it drives your real, already-open browser (tabs, bookmarks, session) rather than simulating one with a headless browser or extension.

Can it avoid bot detection?

Yes, its stealth mode hides CDP fingerprints like navigator.webdriver, spoofs chrome.runtime, and masks Function.toString to evade systems like Cloudflare Bot Fight Mode.

What tools does it provide?

It provides 52 tools covering navigation, tab management, interaction (click, type, drag, upload), reading (screenshots, DOM inspection, accessibility snapshots), and waiting.

What protocols does it use to connect AI and browser?

It speaks MCP over stdio to the AI client and CDP over WebSocket to the browser.
