About Upstash

Upstash is a serverless data platform offering Redis, a vector database, and messaging/workflow tools accessed through HTTP-based APIs. Redis provides low-latency, in-memory data storage with disk-based persistence, automatic backups, and multi-region replication; typical uses include caching, session management, rate limiting, leaderboards, and chat. Vector is a serverless vector database for similarity search at scale, combining disk-based indexing with metadata filtering via SQL-style queries. QStash handles serverless messaging and scheduling over HTTP, including CRON-based scheduled tasks and automatic retries for failed deliveries. Workflow orchestrates serverless functions with support for long-running processes and automatic error recovery. Box provides secure, isolated cloud containers for AI agents with shell, filesystem, and git access, persistent storage, and usage-based pricing.

The platform is built for serverless and edge environments, with data replicated across 8 or more regions and per-request pricing that scales to zero. It is tested and optimized for Vercel Edge, Cloudflare Workers, and Fastly Edge. Client SDKs are available for TypeScript and Python.

Upstash also provides tooling for AI coding agents, including a skills package covering its SDKs and CLI, an MCP server for managing and debugging resources (databases, QStash logs, workflow runs) from an editor, and a CLI for resource management from the terminal or CI/CD with JSON output. It is aimed at developers building serverless and edge applications, as well as those integrating AI coding agents into their workflow.

Key features

  • Serverless Redis with global multi-region replication and per-request pricing that scales to zero
  • Vector database for similarity search at scale with SQL-based metadata filtering
  • QStash serverless HTTP messaging with CRON scheduling and automatic retries
  • Workflow orchestration for durable, long-running serverless functions without timeouts
  • Box: secure, persistent cloud containers for AI agents with shell, filesystem, and git access
  • HTTP/REST APIs for access from serverless and edge environments like Vercel Edge and Cloudflare Workers

Frequently asked questions

Does Upstash have a free tier?

Yes, you can start for free and pricing scales to zero, with pay-per-request pricing beyond that and a guaranteed cost cap.

What products does Upstash offer?

Upstash offers Redis, Vector, QStash messaging, Workflow orchestration, and Box (secure cloud containers for AI agents).

What platforms and languages does Upstash support?

Upstash provides HTTP-based APIs with SDKs for TypeScript and Python, and is tested and optimized for Vercel Edge, Cloudflare Workers, and Fastly Edge.

Does Upstash support AI coding agents?

Yes, Upstash offers Skills, an MCP Server, and a CLI so agents like Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, and Cursor can create databases, debug resources, and manage QStash and Workflow logs.

How does Upstash Redis differ from traditional Redis hosting?

It is serverless with automatic scaling, no server management, 99.99% uptime, and an HTTP/REST API alongside standard Redis protocol support.
