Best Oh My Zsh Themes in 2026: What Still Ships
Quick answer: Powerlevel10k is still the best Oh My Zsh theme for most people in 2026: fast, informative and set up by a wizard. Its README now says the project has very limited support, though. Pick Spaceship or Pure for an actively maintained alternative, agnoster for the best bundled theme, or Starship to replace the theme in any shell.
Most "best Oh My Zsh themes" lists were written years ago, and theme repositories age quietly. So before ranking anything, we checked when each one last changed.
How we checked 143 bundled themes
Oh My Zsh ships its themes in the themes/ folder of the ohmyzsh/ohmyzsh repository. On 16 October 2026 we read the git history of all 143 .zsh-theme files on the default branch, and pulled stars, archive status and the latest commit for the most-recommended external themes through the GitHub API.
What that turned up:
- 79 of the 143 bundled themes (55%) have not changed in five years. Some are finished rather than broken, since a prompt that prints a path and a git branch does not need much upkeep.
- 17 bundled themes changed in the last 12 months, but 9 of those came from one bulk fix on 28 May 2026 that escaped
%characters in git prompts. Only 8 got a change of their own, agnoster among them. - The popular external themes are mostly alive. Powerlevel10k, Spaceship and Pure all had commits in September or October 2026. The stale ones are the names older guides still recommend.
Last-commit date is a blunt signal. It is still the first thing to check for the file that runs every time you open a shell.
The best Oh My Zsh themes, ranked
Ranked by how much they do for a typical setup, with stars and last commit (read on 16 October 2026) so you can check our work.
1. Powerlevel10k
55,253 stars, last commit 6 September 2026. The fastest feature-rich prompt for Zsh, with "instant prompt" so the shell is usable before plugins finish loading, and a p10k configure wizard that builds your config by asking questions. Set ZSH_THEME="powerlevel10k/powerlevel10k" after cloning it into your custom themes folder, and install the recommended Meslo Nerd Font first.
The catch is in the README: "THE PROJECT HAS VERY LIMITED SUPPORT", with no new features planned and most bugs left unfixed. It works well, and a large share of setups depend on it.
Verdict: the best theme you can install, as long as you accept that what you see is what it will stay.
2. Spaceship
20,590 stars, last commit 2 September 2026, release v4.22.5 on 1 July 2026. A minimal-looking prompt that shows context only when it matters: the Node, Python or Rust version inside a project, git status, battery, execution time. It installs as an Oh My Zsh theme (ZSH_THEME="spaceship") and needs a Powerline or Nerd Font.
Verdict: the best maintained alternative to Powerlevel10k if you want rich context without the wizard.
3. Pure
14,444 stars, last commit 7 October 2026. A single-line, almost bare prompt: path, git branch and dirty state, and the run time of slow commands, with git checks done asynchronously so the prompt never waits. It needs Zsh 5.2 or newer, and with Oh My Zsh you set ZSH_THEME="" and load Pure after oh-my-zsh.sh.
Verdict: the pick if your ideal prompt is one that gets out of the way.
4. agnoster
Bundled with Oh My Zsh, last changed 10 September 2026. The Powerline-style segmented prompt that most screenshots of Oh My Zsh show: user and host, path, git state and the active virtual environment in coloured blocks. It needs a Powerline-patched font, and its own comments recommend the Solarized colour scheme.
Verdict: the best bundled theme, and the easiest upgrade from the default.
5. robbyrussell
The default theme every new install starts with (ZSH_THEME="robbyrussell" in the template .zshrc), last changed 24 November 2023. An arrow, the current folder and the git branch. Its quiet history is a sign that it is finished, not abandoned.
Verdict: keep it if you never think about your prompt; that is what it is for.
6. Dracula for Zsh
297 stars, last commit 23 April 2026. The Zsh port of the Dracula colour scheme, maintained by the Dracula project alongside its ports for terminals and editors. Worth it if the rest of your tools already run Dracula, so the prompt matches the terminal and the editor.
Verdict: the theme for a consistent look across every tool you use.
7. typewritten
950 stars, last commit 13 May 2026. A minimal, lightweight prompt with a handful of layouts to choose from, including one modelled on Pure. Git info loads asynchronously, and its README screenshots use plain JetBrains Mono rather than a patched font.
Verdict: Pure's simplicity with more visual personality.
8. agkozak-zsh-prompt
356 stars, last commit 29 May 2026. A fast asynchronous prompt with colour ASCII indicators for git, exit status, SSH, virtual environments and vi mode. It is framework-agnostic, so it works with or without Oh My Zsh and needs no special font.
Verdict: the one to pick when you SSH into machines where you cannot install a Nerd Font.
Which popular themes have stopped?
All of these still appear in older guides, and all still install:
| Theme | Stars | Last change | Use instead | |---|---|---|---| | Powerlevel9k | 13,404 | archived (2020-04-23) | Powerlevel10k | | bullet-train.zsh | 2,838 | 2019-09-17 | Spaceship or agnoster | | geometry | 1,000 | 2025-01-13 | Pure or typewritten | | lambda (bundled) | n/a | 2018-08-07 | Pure | | steeef (bundled) | n/a | 2018-08-07 | agnoster | | candy (bundled) | n/a | 2016-03-30 | robbyrussell or bira |
Powerlevel9k is the instructive case. Its successor, Powerlevel10k, was built as a faster drop-in replacement, and Powerlevel9k's repository has been archived since 2020. Powerlevel10k is now on its own limited-support notice, which is why the next section exists.
Should you replace the theme with Starship?
If you use more than one shell, probably. Starship (60,286 stars, last commit 16 October 2026, release v1.26.0 on 28 June 2026) is a prompt written in Rust that works in Zsh, Bash, Fish and PowerShell from one config file, so your prompt looks the same on every machine. You add one eval "$(starship init zsh)" line to .zshrc and leave ZSH_THEME empty. It needs a Nerd Font.
Oh My Posh (23,595 stars, release v31.8.0 on 12 October 2026) is the same idea, a cross-shell prompt theme engine, and the stronger choice if you also work in Windows PowerShell.
Both keep Oh My Zsh's plugins and aliases: only the prompt changes. That makes them the safest exit if Powerlevel10k's support notice worries you.
How do you choose an Oh My Zsh theme?
Four questions settle it:
- Do you have a Nerd Font? Powerlevel10k, Spaceship, agnoster and Starship need one for their icons and segment arrows. Our coding fonts ranking covers fonts that ship Nerd Font builds, and the font category lists 20 fonts.
- How much do you want to see? Language versions and cloud context (Spaceship, Powerlevel10k) or just path and branch (Pure, robbyrussell).
- Does speed matter? On large git repositories, asynchronous prompts (Powerlevel10k, Pure, typewritten, agkozak) stay responsive where synchronous ones lag.
- One shell or several? Several means Starship or Oh My Posh.
What does our directory add?
Less than it does for terminals, and we would rather say so: our terminal category holds 7 listings as of 16 October 2026, and none of them is a Zsh theme. The relevant one is Dracula theme, whose Zsh port is entry 6 above and whose terminal ports keep your colours consistent.
A theme only looks right in a terminal that renders it well. Our Mac terminal ranking and Linux terminal ranking cover which terminals handle Nerd Font glyphs and true colour cleanly.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best Oh My Zsh theme?
Powerlevel10k, for most people: it is fast, shows a lot of context and configures itself through a wizard. Because its README now says it has very limited support, Spaceship and Pure are the best choices if active maintenance matters to you.
How do I change my Oh My Zsh theme?
Open ~/.zshrc, set ZSH_THEME to the theme's name (for example ZSH_THEME="agnoster"), save, and run exec zsh or open a new terminal. External themes go into ~/.oh-my-zsh/custom/themes first. Setting ZSH_THEME="random" loads a different bundled theme each time, which is a quick way to browse them.
Is Powerlevel10k still maintained?
Only barely. It had a commit on 6 September 2026, but its README states that it has very limited support, no new features are in the works and most bugs will go unfixed. It still works well, so there is no reason to remove it from a working setup.
Do I need a Nerd Font for Oh My Zsh themes?
Not for every theme. robbyrussell, Pure, typewritten and agkozak-zsh-prompt work with any font. Powerline-style themes such as agnoster, Spaceship and Powerlevel10k need a patched font, or their arrows and icons render as empty boxes.
What is the default Oh My Zsh theme?
robbyrussell, named after Oh My Zsh's creator. Every new install sets it in the template .zshrc, and it shows an arrow, the current folder and the git branch.
After switching, open a git repository with uncommitted changes and a virtual environment active: that is where a theme either shows you what you need or shows you broken glyphs.
